The First Seminole War

Hodges University's Frances Pew Hayes Center for Lifelong Learning is hosting Dr. Ted Childress, who will present "The First Seminole War." Disparate groups of Native Americans from the south migrated into Spanish Florida in the 18th and early 19th centuries and became loosely-known as Seminoles. During and after the War of 1812, British officers and filibusterers encouraged the Indians to launch raids into Alabama and Georgia. General Andrew Jackson was ordered to invade Spanish Florida to stop the incursions, which he did in 1817-1818, but the repercussions of his actions went far beyond merely suppressing hostile Indians. Over the following 20 years, diplomacy, military policy, domestic politics and Indian affairs would all be greatly affected by the actions and issues arising from the First Seminole War.
