Although wintertime in Southwest Florida brings enjoyably cooler weather, it can also bring rain, temperatures that are a bit “too cold” and, of course, earlier sunsets. Indoor sports offer a great option to combat the elements and are a terrific way for children, and adults, to get exercise—and, if it is still needed at times, under the comfort of air conditioning.

For children who are prone to jumping on their bed or the couch, a good outlet is an indoor trampoline experience. Sky Zone in Fort Myers offers the perfect opportunity to do so. The young ones can enjoy freestyle bouncing, games such as dodgeball, and fitness programs for toning up.

A zip line, sky ladder, warped wall and foam zone are just some of Sky Zone in Fort Myers’ attractions. For the youngest of them all, there’s Little Leapers, a time for the smaller ones to get out and jump. “My son, Chris, 8, has attended parties and get-togethers at Sky Zone, and it’s always guaranteed a good time,” says Fort Myers resident Bill Davis. “Plus, it’s fun to watch them,” he adds.

Perhaps children and adults want something a little more daring? DEFY in Fort Myers can provide challenges and thrills on everything from foam pits to obstacle course to trampolines to aerial silks. For those who enjoy watching the hit television show American Gladiator, this is their chance to work on becoming the next hero. The extreme air sports park offers a chance to self-express and push oneself to the limit. While older children love to excel in these daring adventures, even the younger ones will find opportunities, because all age groups are welcome.

Indoor soccer can be just as fun as outdoor soccer. However, indoor fields are smaller, which keeps the game faster paced. “The consistent movement helps develop speed, power, coordination and endurance,” explains Jessica Wright. She is the owner of Cape Coral-based Fair Play Indoor Soccer. Playing on air-conditioned fields is a plus—and the bugs aren’t biting.

Families can all participate in bowling, a sport that dates back to the early Egyptians, when stones were rolled at objects. Luckily for Southwest Floridians, bowling alleys are never too far away. Head Pinz is located in Cape Coral and Fort Myers, Bowland is in Cape Coral and Naples, and Fort Myers Beach Bowl Billiards and Sports Bar is in Fort Myers Beach.

The bowling alleys offer events and packages that may include deals for the game room, another option for indoor fun. Examples include Head Pinz in Cape Coral, with its Sunday Pizza Bowl and a Bowling Stimulus Package with two hours of bowling for one low price. Food and beverages are available. If you’re a bowling fan, ask about leagues.

Always check websites or call for updates on safety measures at indoor facilities, and possible closures. Some require face masks, temperature checks and social distancing.
