The School District of Lee County celebrated quite a few
milestones in the Florida Department of Education 's
preliminary school grades for the 2016-17 school year. The statistics
were released at the end of June, showing 52% of Lee County public
schools earning an
“A” or “B” grade. This marks a 46-percent increase from 2015-16. The
statewide average is 57 percent.
"While the [district] maintained its 'B' grade for a third year in a row, it increased its overall percentage of total points possible from 54 to 57," the district's website says. "This 3 [percent] increase moves the [district] closer to its goal of an 'A' grade."
Another win for the district was that no Lee County schools were graded an "F." About 30 percent of the schools in the district improved their grades from the prior year.
"James Stephens International Academy raised its grade from an 'F' to a 'B' in one year, Bayshore Elementary went from a 'C' to an 'A' as did Caloosa Elementary School," the website continues. "Twenty-seven District schools increased their letter grade, 57 maintained, and 10 dropped."
According to the district’s calculations, Lee County rises from 35th in the state to 30th.
"I am proud of the hard work of our teachers, administrators and district staff over the last year. While we know our schools are much more than a grade, this data shows we are moving in the right direction,” superintendent Dr. Greg Adkins said in the story. “Through Vision 2020, we have created tools for each of our schools that enables them to meet the individual needs of our students. We are constantly implementing ways to improve and will continue to personalize education so we give our students, parents and community what they deserve, a world-class school system.”
